Become a Surf Sports Official

Why

Accredited Surf Sports Officials are needed to conduct the various Surf Carnivals held throughout the year. In order to meet the personnel requirements each Branch or organising body sets a ratio of supplying at least one Accredited Official for 10 competitors. In some cases, as with a recent carnival in Maroochydore, the ratio was set at 1:8. In situations where we are unable to supply the required number of Officials we must reduce the number of our competitors. Your Board and Surf Sports Committee offer travel and accommodation assistance when you are required to attend away carnivals.

Who

A financial club member who holds the category of Associate, Active, Long Service, or Active Reserve are eligible to become a Surf Sports Official with at least 12 months membership.

How

To become an Accredited Surf Sports Official you are required to attend a training session which lasts for approximately four hours. You then become a Probationary Surf Sports Official until you complete several carnivals and then complete an Assessment conducted by one of the Senior Officials. Following this you become a fully Accredited Official. The Accreditation lasts for 5 years and on renewal you must have completed 100 hours officiating. You are issued with a log book for you to have signed off by the Sectional Referee after each Carnival.

When

The Level 1 Officials training courses are held throughout the year and dates are advertised in our Kurrawa Catchup Newsletter.

Where

The Training courses are usually held at the South Coast Branch office behind the Mermaid Beach Surf Club. It is possible to join courses run by Point Danger Branch.
